Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a medical engineer aboard her maiden shuttle trip. Her administrator is experienced space traveler Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), who is leading his final mission before retiring. Then, during the pair’s routine space promenade, everything goes south: The vehicle is destroyed, leaving Ryan and Matt alone in deep space, with no connection to Earth and no hope of rescue. As terror begins to overwhelm them, they realize that the only way home may be to walk farther into space.

Matt Kowalski, a veteran space traveler, is in charge of the Shuttle Explorer’s STS-157 mission to repair the Hubble Telescope, which is being carried out by tenderfoot specialist Ryan Stone. Houston control abruptly terminates the operation, warning that a Russian rocket had collided with a satellite, triggering a chain reaction and now a deluge of rubbish is falling on them. They eventually lose contact with Mission Control in Houston. The rubbish strikes the Explorer, forcing Ryan to exit the bus and Kowalski to return her to the vehicle. Nonetheless, the Explorer is completely destroyed, and their only chance of returning to Earth is to visit another space station. However, they are short on oxygen and fuel.
